Network Designer Job Description

Not to be confused with network administrators who manage and support the network, or network engineers who build and repair networks, network designers use their network design skills to develop networks, including required computer network components. This differs from computer network architects who use the network designs to finish network constructions. A network designer must understand the business needs of the company to design an efficient, secure, and scalable network that is consistent with strategic objectives. Once they understand the business requirements, network designers can begin the network design process, carefully considering which hardware, software, cables, and infrastructure are best suited to the particular project. Network designers evaluate existing devices in the network and integrate the software and devices already in use into the new network design infrastructures.

 Each network is unique in that it is designed to serve the operational and business objectives of the company. The network designer must spend time with end users, managers, and executives to understand their goals and requirements and develop network designs that meet those needs. During the design process, their goal is to create a network that meets the established architectural standards of the company, while ensuring that the computer systems are in line with the organization's business needs as well as the needs of the customer.  

Network designers must determine the required network capacity to ensure that they have the leeway to accommodate the organization's traffic. Network designers determine the best system to develop to meet these requirements. They are responsible for determining cable routing and placement, selecting modems and routers, and monitoring the installation and implementation of computers in the network system. Network designers also maintain documentation throughout the entire installation and implementation process, ensuring full adherence to project deadlines.

Network designers' job responsibilities may require them to work with the Chief Technology Officer and hardware engineers to predict future requirements and determine where new networks should be built. They analyze the organization's traffic and plan the future of the network and its use in business. The network designers must also consider information security and new technological developments to develop the most effective and reliable systems and network design infrastructures. Network designers may coordinate technological needs based on budget considerations and monitor software and hardware installation. 

The computer network designer creates plans for the layout, data, and communication of the network, from establishing a small connection between two offices to accessing extensive network capacity to connect customers worldwide. The system can be a commercial office or even an entire office building. This role requires a deep understanding of business plans to design a network that best meets the current and future needs of businesses. To create a layout, network designers and computer network architects must keep an eye on the architectural and operational specifications and standards of the organization. Depending on the scope, complexity, and communication requirements, network designers must create multiple diagrams that show details of the location of each device.

The design and management of a group of computers that interconnect is an important part of this job. The goal of the network designer is to ensure the integrity and availability of the network infrastructure to provide maximum performance to users. They offer support to users who may be employees, customers, or suppliers and resolve problems that arise.
